OTHER
SPORTS:
The Seattle Mariners fell into sole possession of
last place in the American League West last night, losing to the Texas Rangers
2-0 on a season-low two hits at Safeco Field. The Rangers' Vicente Padilla
pitched seven innings, giving up two hits, walking two and striking out eight.
He improved his record to 5-2. A crowd of 17,173 watched the Rangers beat the
Mariners for the second straight night and saw Seattle get shut out for the
second time this season. The Mariners lost for the seventh time in eight games
to drop to 14 and 21, the worst record in the American League. In their last 23
innings, the Mariners have produced one run on 10 hits in 78 at-bats for a .128
average. They have had two hits in their last 16 opportunities with runners in
scoring position. Ichiro Suzuki and Yuniesky Betancourt had Seattle's hits, both
singles. Mariners first baseman Richie Sexson was scratched from the lineup
because of what were called personal issues. For Texas, Milton Bradley hit his
fourth home run in the sixth and scored both runs. Brandon Boggs had an
run-scoring triple in the fourth. Mariners No. 1 starter Erik Bedard gave up two
runs on six hits in seven innings, with his record falling to 2-2 despite an ERA
of 1.99. Frustrated Mariners manager John McLaren was ejected in the second
inning by home plate umpire Mark Wegner for arguing balls and strikes, his
second ejection this season.
After being shut out for 13 straight innings and scoring just one run in 23
innings, the Mariners will try to get their offense going against Rangers'
left-hander Kason Gabbard tonight. The Mariners will start their No. 2
starter, right-hander Felix Hernandez. Hernandez has a 2-2 record with a 3.04
ERA, while Gabbard is 1-0 with a 2.18 ERA. Gabbard is coming off the disabled
list today after being sidelined with a stiff back. The game is on 1030 KMAS.
Pregame is 6pm. First pitch is 7:10.
Tacoma collected 10 hits, but they were all singles, and the Rainiers lost to
the Iowa Cubs 4-3 in a Pacific Coast League game last night in Des Moines.
Yung Chi Chen, Shawn Garrett, Bryan LaHair and Oswaldo Navarro each had two hits
for the Rainiers. Thirty-three-year-old knuckleballer R.A. Dickey started for
Tacoma and allowed four runs on 10 hits and four walks in 7 2-3 innings. His
record fell to 1-4. The teams play again at 10:05 this morning in Des Moines.
The Spokane Chiefs beat the Lethbridge Hurricanes 4-1 last night in Alberta
to sweep their Western Hockey League championship series in four games.
University of Washington will host 2008 NCAA Division I women's volleyball
regional competition at its Bank of America Arena on Dec. 12-13. The
announcement was made yesterday at Indianapolis by the NCAA Division I women's
Volleyball Committee. The other 2008 regional competition sites on the same
dates will be Gainesville, Fla.; Minneapolis and Lincoln, Neb. The Huskies have
appeared in six straight NCAA Division I women's volleyball national
tournaments. In 2007, they finished the season with a 27-4 record and were
ranked No. 10 in the nation. Among their top 2008 returners are middle blocker
Jessica Swarbrick and libero Tamari Miyashiro. Swarbrick was a second team
American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America choice last year, while
Miyashiro was a third-team honoree.
French forward Sebastien Le Toux has become the first player to sign with the
Seattle Sounders FC, the new Major League Soccer franchise to play at Qwest
Field starting next year. Le Toux is also with the current Sounders team
that plays in the United Soccer League. The 24-year-old Le Toux also has played
for F.C. Lorient in the French League 2 and Stade Rennais Football Club in the
French First Division. Earlier last season, Le Toux was on trial with FC Dallas
of the MLS before finding his way to the Sounders' first invitational training
camp.
