Mass Gay Wedding Planned
A Mass Marriage Ceremony is set for the Capitol Rotunda in Olympia on December 15th, the first Saturday after gay and lesbian couples can obtain their marriage licenses. The idea for the mass wedding
germinated last February, shortly after The Governor signed the marriage equality act into law. Teresa Guajardo and Tina Roose, reserved the rotunda as an act of faith, believing Washington voters would uphold their right to marry. Once the election passed, the idea evolved into a plan to have as many couples as possible get married in the capitol in simultaneous or consecutive ceremonies from 12:30 to 2:30.The couple ordered wedding cake for 250 people, and started a facebook page- “get married with us at the capitol” to recruit additional couples.
The new gay-marriage laws s are expected to boost the wedding trade. A study from the Williams Institute, a think tank at the UCLA School of Law, says the new laws should generate at least $166 million in wedding spending in the three states over the next three years from in-state couples alone.
The numbers will go up even more when figuring in spending from out-of-state couples who travel to get married in those states
A Maine man who's launched an online wedding directory connecting same-sex couples with gay-friendly businesses said the law should benefit businesses ranging from tuxedo rental shops, florists, photographers and wedding planners to jewelers, limousine services, and musicians and DJs who provide wedding reception entertainment.
