Making Music and Visual Art Out of Words
Join us for an opportunity to examine how writers create three-dimensional experiences out of two-dimensional words on a page. In this afternoon program for writers and readers alike, authors Erica Bauermeister (The School of Essential Ingredients, Joy for Beginners) and Stephanie Kallos (Broken for You, Sing Them Home) delve into the intersection of the visual, musical, and literary arts through a discussion of rhythm, metaphor, sentence structure, and style in their writing. Click here to purchase tickets.

March 11
History, Art, and the Novel
Delve into the interaction of history and fiction with Dave Boling and Indu Sundaresan. Indu Sundaresan (Taj Mahal Trilogy) will take us on a virtual tour through the hallways of 17th century India’s palaces, harem apartments, forts, gardens, and tombs, discussing how existing structures and historical accounts influenced the writing of her novels. Dave Boling (Guernica) explores how history and art collided after the tragic Nazi bombing of the Basque village of Guernica in 1937, the horrific event which spurred the creation of Picasso's iconic anti-war mural Guernica. Click here to purchase tickets.

March 18
Thrillers and Movies and Terror, Oh My!
This is a program for thriller fans who like their chills and excitement served up on the printed page and the big screen. Seattle-area movie lovers and Seattle7Writers Boyd Morrison (The Ark, The Vault) and Kevin O'Brien (Final Breath, Vicious, Disturbed) will discuss how movies influence their best-selling thrillers. Learn about the writers’ favorite films; how watching movies has made them more aware of pace, plotting, and character development in their own writing; and how movie soundtracks provide just the right mood music for spine-tingling writing. Click here to purchase tickets.

March 25
The Art of Technology
We tend to think of science and technology stories as logical, linear, and objective. But are they? Authors Thea Cooper (Breakthrough: Elizabeth Hughes, the Discovery of Insulin, and the Making of a Medical Miracle) and Laurie Frankel (The Atlas of Love) contend that while scientifically based projects often begin with linear intentions, they frequently take a meandering path to somewhere far more creative and impressionistic. This is a talk for anyone looking to bring artistic lenses to the left-brain aspects of their lives and willing to discover that fiction, narrative, and miracles exist even within the world of science and technology. Click here to purchase tickets.

Lecture: The Lavender Palette: Gay Northwest Artists in the Early 20th Century
Saturday, March 24, 1 pm
The reputations of many gay artists have suffered due to the lack of extant material, which is often destroyed by embarrassed family members or friends after their deaths. Lecturer David Martin has done extensive investigation into this subject over the past twenty years and uncovered important material. In this lecture, he shines a lens on gay, lesbian, and bisexual artists who were active in Washington State before 1960. Although these artists achieved local and even national recognition during their lifetime, their personal lives have rarely, if ever, been discussed, and most of the gay-oriented works by these artists that Martin will reveal have never before been seen by the public. Cost: $15 ($10 for members, $5 for students). Includes museum admission. Click here to purchase tickets.

EXHIBITIONS
The Eloquent Silver Curve: The Jewelry of Flora Book
On view through February 5, 2012
Flora Book has combined her passion for elegant jewelry with her love of silver and life-long study of textiles. Unlike many other Northwest jewelry artists who favor narrative content and use found objects, Book has focused almost exclusively on the expressive possibilities offered by meticulous strands of slender silver beads. Organized by Tacoma Art Museum.

Folk Treasures of Mexico: The Nelson A. Rockefeller Collection from the San Antonio Museum of Art
On view through February 19, 2012
Selections from Nelson A. Rockefeller’s collection, considered the finest collection of Mexican folk art in the United States, offer a rare chance to both marvel at and learn about the cultural heritage of the people of Mexico through artisans, cultural objects, and practices. The exhibition will feature approximately 80 major works of Mexican folk art in all media from 12 different Mexican states. Organized by Tacoma Art Museum.

At Home Across America: Scenes from the 1930s to 1950s in Prints
On view through February 26, 2012
Rarely seen prints from the museum’s collection showcase the American Scene, one of the most popular subjects for American art in the 1930s and 1940s. Sold in the form of inexpensive prints by publishers like Associated American Artists, these images of daily life, particularly rural life, in different regions of the country helped create regional markers that are now deeply ingrained in how we think about parts of the country today like New England lighthouses, Midwest corn fields, and others. Organized by Tacoma Art Museum.

The 10th Northwest Biennial
On view through May 20, 2012
Featuring more than 30 Northwest artists from Washington, Oregon, British Columbia, Idaho, and Montana, The Biennial addresses critical issues of Pacific Northwest identity and community and the newly revitalized and resurgent forms of interdisciplinary art. Organized by Tacoma Art Museum.

HIDE/SEEK: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture
March 17 through June 10, 2012
HIDE/SEEKoffers an unprecedented survey of nearly 150 years of American art and includes more than 100 works by masters including Thomas Eakins, John Singer Sargent, Georgia O’Keeffe, Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and more. The exhibition marks the first time these iconic works by renowned artists have been presented within a context that emphasizes the importance of gay and lesbian identity, sexuality, AIDS, and the articulation of gender difference in shaping the contours of the broader American culture.
