Amateur radio operators, commonly called Ham Radio operators, showed off their skills over the weekend during their annual “Field Day” event that ran from 11 AM Saturday to 11 AM Sunday. Operators
used all types of systems from the traditional radio signals and Morse code to global positioning systems. Systems were powered by generator, solar power, and battery. Antennas were set up in many different ways from being strung in trees by a bow and arrow to being placed on ladders. The event demonstrated how these operators can communicate if other communications, such as telephone and cell phone, go down during a disaster or emergency. These
types of operators have been critical during recent emergencies including the California wildfires and Hurricane Katrina. There are two Amateur Radio clubs in Mason County: the North Mason Amateur Radio Emergency Service Club and Mason County Amateur Radio Club.
