A Lacey man has pleaded guilty to four counts of first degree theft in connection with taking $1.4 Million of trust fund money and an additional $400,000 belonging to his family's two funeral homes - one of which is in Shelton. 38-year-old Joseph Patrick Burgman was sentence to one year in jail but can enroll in a work-release program. Under a plea agreement, prosecutors dropped four counts of first degree theft, 31 counts of second degree theft and one count of unlawful use of criminal proceeds. The thefts occurred when Burgman was the vice president of Southwick Corporation which controls Forest Funeral Home in Shelton and Woodlawn Funeral Home in Lacey. The trust fund is used to cover the costs of prearranged funerals and to maintain cemeteries and burial sites. The money has been repaid by Burgman's parents. He is the son of Lacey council member Ann Burgman.
