The Shelton City Commission has approved the interim fire services agreement with Mason County Fire District Five. Monday night, the City Commissioners unanimously approved signing the agreement that spells out how the Fire District will provide fire and emergency medical services to the City while the annexation of the City into the Fire District is completed. Any annexation has to be approved by a vote of the people. The interim agreement allows both entities to see how an annexation will work. It also allows adjustments to the agreement over the next two and a half years or so as every aspect of the agreement will be reviewed quarterly. Under the agreement, all City Fire personnel will become Fire District employees. All Shelton Fire Department equipment and facilities will be under Fire District control. The Fire District will then provide service levels “at least equal to those currently provided by the City's Fire Department.” The City will compensate the Fire District for these services. That compensation for the rest of this year will be the remaining amount of the 2008 Shelton Fire Department Budget. At this time, the compensation for 2009 will be 3% higher than the 2008 budget, and in 2010, the compensation will be another 3% higher. The agreement also has the Fire District buying Mason County Medic One and providing medical transportation services in the City. The revenue from this service would be split between both the City and the Fire District. The Mason County Fire District Five Commissioners still need to approve this interim agreement. The next meeting of the Fire District Commission is set for 10 AM Wednesday. If the Fire District Commissioners decide to sign the agreement then a joint signing meeting will be held. The agreement would be effective July 1st.
